Sócrates is an AI system implemented by Brazil's Superior Court of Justice (STJ) to automate the examination of appeals and related decisions. It recommends normative sources and legal precedents, providing action suggestions to assist Ministers in their final decisions. The system focuses on data classification, employing natural language processing and unsupervised machine learning techniques trained on previous petitions and court decisions. It employs semantic analysis to screen and classify lawsuits and appeals, identifying cases with similar matters and researching court judgments that can serve as precedents for the case under examination. Sócrates also identifies cases with potential registration issues and supports the STJ's Corporate School in defining training needs.

Training and Capacity Building

AI for Judicial Training: AI tools are used to develop training programs for judges and legal professionals, helping them understand and effectively utilize AI technologies in their work.

#analyze Analyze legal appeals and previous court decisions to identify relevant normative sources and legal precedents. The system enhances judicial decision-making by extracting key insights from historical cases.
#automate Automate the classification of legal documents and case types, reducing manual workload for court officials. The system streamlines the processing of appeals by identifying cases that may not meet procedural requirements.
#predict Predict potential outcomes based on patterns in past court decisions and legal arguments. This helps judges assess the likelihood of appeal success and make informed choices.
